Why Choose Our Kashmiri Papier-Mâché Cat Box?

  • Fully Functional Lidded Box: The cat's body forms a snug lid that lifts off to reveal a smooth interior — perfect for rings, earrings, studs, or small keepsakes.
  • Exquisite Hand-Painted Detail: Green eyes, pink inner ears, fine hand-drawn whiskers, and grey-stripe tabby markings — every stroke applied freehand by a master Naqash painter.
  • 100% Handcrafted in Kashmir: Shaped from layers of hand-soaked paper pulp, dried, sanded, lacquered, and painted in Srinagar's artisan quarters.
  • High-Gloss Lacquer Finish: Sealed with a protective lacquer that gives the piece its characteristic lustrous sheen and protects the paintwork for years.
  • GI-Tagged Kashmiri Craft: Kashmiri papier-mâché holds a Geographical Indication tag — a government-certified mark of genuine valley origin and authentic technique.

A Trinket Box That Stares Back

Those vivid green eyes, the carefully painted whiskers, the perfectly curled tabby body — this is not mass-produced décor. It is a 3-inch sculpture made entirely by one artisan's hands, from shaping the pulp to the final lacquer coat.

The Art Behind Every Cat

In the narrow lanes of Srinagar's old city, Kashmiri papier-mâché — known as Kari Kalamdan — has been practised for over five centuries. The craft arrived in Kashmir in the 15th century through Persian artisans brought by Sultan Zain-ul-Abidin, and took root so deeply that it became the defining decorative art of the valley. The process begins with Sakhtsazi: the hand-shaping of wet paper pulp, built up layer by patient layer over a form, then dried and sanded smooth. Next comes Naqashi: the painting stage, where master artists use fine squirrel-hair brushes to render the face, fur texture, ear detail, and eyes entirely freehand.

What you hold in your hands is not a souvenir. It is a small document of a living craft tradition — made by a named artisan, in a city that has kept this art alive through centuries of change.

Frequently Asked Questions About Our Kashmiri Papier-Mâché Cat Trinket Box

Everything you want to know about this handcrafted cat box — from the craft process and what fits inside, to care, gifting, and ordering.

What exactly is this product — is it decorative or functional?

Both. The cat box is a lidded trinket and jewellery box — the upper half (the cat's body and face) lifts off as a lid to reveal a smooth hollow interior, ideal for storing rings, earrings, studs, or small keepsakes. It is equally a decorative art object and a practical storage piece.

What is it made from?

It is made using traditional Kashmiri papier-mâché technique: layers of hand-soaked paper pulp are shaped, dried, and sanded smooth (Sakhtsazi), then hand-painted with fine brushes (Naqashi), and finally sealed with a high-gloss lacquer for durability and sheen.

What size is it and how much does it cost?

The cat trinket box is 3 inches in size — compact and perfect for a dressing table, desk, or shelf. It is priced at ₹400 per piece.

Will my box look exactly like the photo?

Very close, but not identical — because each piece is painted entirely by hand, minor variations in stripe pattern, eye shade, or whisker placement are natural. These small differences are what make every piece one-of-a-kind, and are considered a mark of authentic handmade craft rather than a flaw.

How do I care for it?

Dust with a dry, soft cloth. Keep away from water, prolonged direct sunlight, and damp environments. The lacquer finish protects the paintwork well under normal indoor conditions, and the piece should remain vibrant for many years.

Is it suitable as a gift?

Absolutely — it makes a wonderful gift for cat lovers, craft enthusiasts, or anyone who appreciates handmade art. Ideal for birthdays, Eid, Diwali, housewarming, or as a desk or dressing table gift. We can include a note card on the craft's heritage on request.

Do you ship internationally?

Yes! We ship to many countries internationally. Each piece is carefully padded and boxed for safe transit. Contact us at [email protected] or +91-9055522202 for international shipping rates and delivery timelines.
